SHREE annapurna secondary school

About THE sCHOOL

Shree Annapurna Secondary School is located in the remote region of Manangbesi in Manang district of Nepal. Established in 2029 B.S. it currently has a total of about 60 students. Due to the remoteness of the school, harsh weather conditions and thin settlement there aren't many students enrolled in the school. The school has a computer lab with twelve desktop computers, however, only two were barely working during the visit in November 2021. Even the solar power backup system funded by Nepal Telecom Authority needed substantial repair work to make it operational. Although electricity is available in the Manang valley and in the school through local micro-hydro electricity supply, it is not very reliable.

Project Partner

eBlackboard is working directly with the ex-school Board Chairperson Mrs. Tshering Ongma Ghale to implement and monitor the project in the school. It is also getting additional support from Rtn. Wangel Ghale of Rotary Club of Thamel, although the Club is not directly associated with the project. Two meetings were held with Rtn. Ghale in Kathmandu who has volunteered to help with the implementation. One additional Raspberry Pi computer set was left with him, which he will send it to the school once it reopens after winter vacation. It is possible that the Rotary Club could be involved with this project in future.

The implementation

A schematic diagram of the project is given on the right. It consists of a high-resolution projector, a Raspberry Pi computer, speaker set, keyboard and mouse. Power supply would be provided through the grid electricity. The school will start to use the solar power system as a backup for the grid supply once it is repaired. eBlackboard provided one set of the Raspberry Pi computer loaded with the interactive digital learning software. It has learning modules for grades 1-8 for Science, Math, English and Nepali subjects along with exercises for all the lessons for all four subjects. All learning materials are locally developed and are based in the national curriculum.

For the installation the Raspberry Pi computer was first connected to the projector. A keyboard, mouse and a speaker set was then connected to the Pi using USB connectors. A quick demo/training of the ePaath software was provided to a dozen teachers by simply projecting the video on the wall of the computer lab. Additional instructions were given to the teachers on how to operate the computer effectively and how to establish the set more permanently in the lab or any other classroom. Based on this configuration it will be an instructor or teacher led classroom in which the teacher will click through all the learning modules and students will learn by watching and listening to the videos. Since the school had one more high-resolution projector with them eBlackboard has made an arrangement to send one more set to the school with the help of Rtn. Wangel Ghale.

the implementation was a success
