Shree Ganesh Elementary School

About THE sCHOOL

The beneficiary school is an elementary school which was established in 2050 B.S. and has a total of 45 students from grades 1-5. The school is an hour long drive from Manthali, the HQ of Ramechhap district. They have a computer teacher who teaches only theoretical knowledge as they do not have any computers in the school at present. The school was chosen based on its remoteness, absence of any computers used for learning purpose and their inability to attract any potential ICT based projects in future. Despite all the challenges the school faces the principal and its staff were very enthusiastic about the project and made the necessary infrastructure changes to make the computer lab safe from rain and vandalism.

The GAA purchased computer monitors, UPS and accessories such as keyboards, mice and headphones as well as provided fund for transportation. The picture on the left shows the four sets of equipment that were tested in the GAA premises three days prior to the installation to ensure everything is working as expected, specially the audio. Surendra Karmacharya, Technical Manager of the installation team performed the final system testing. Two personnel from the GAA Secretariat, Mr. Niraj Karki and Karan Ghale accompanied the technical management team to the school as representatives of GAA.

After five hours drive to Manthali, HQ of Ramechhap district, the installation team led by Technical Manager Surendra Karmacharya walked for an hour to reach the school on Jan 25, 2019. Two porters helped to carry most of the computer equipment. The team consisted of Sakrit Karmacharya, Niraj Karki and Karan Ghale. They collected the four sets of LED monitors and its accessories as well as the raspberry pi computers and started the installation process.

The installation basically consisted of connecting the raspberry Pi to the monitor using the HDMI to VGA converter cable and the keyboard and mice to the USB ports of raspberry pi. The headphone/speakers were connected using 3.5 mm 4 pole composite video/audio output jack. As the team members had performed the final testing in GAA using a similar process, it didn't take a lot of time for getting the terminal ready to go live.

All four terminals, loaded with ePaath content were ready to go under and hour of installation process. The terminals were powered by grid electricity supply which was hooked to the UPS. In case of power disruption the UPS will automatically start the warning signal giving the students about 5 minutes to shut down all the terminals. This will safeguard the operating system as well as the ePaath software loaded in the microSD card.

A handful of lucky students got lucky to test drive the computer terminals right after installation. Surendra Karmacharya, Technical Manager, Jiblal Manandhar, school Principal and Sumita Shrestha, computer teacher helped the perplexed students how to use the mouse to navigate through the ePaath lessons. It became apparent that these students would need initial training on using the keyboard and mouse along with the fundamentals of how the computer work. A short training on how to teach using ePaath was provided by Surendra and Sakrit Karmacharya immediately after the installation along with tips on safe and effective use of the computer equipment.

the implementation was a success
